The idea of universal healthcare, or “Medicare for All” has become the newest basic policy proposal for Democrats wanting to identify with the progressive wing of the party. When 28-year-old Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez defeated fourth ranking House Democrat incumbent Congressman Joe Crowley in a June primary, she credited her bold policy proposals as to why she won—Medicare for All being one of them.
On Tuesday, Florida voters casted their ballots decisively in favor of a measure that restored voting rights to past felons. In what was the largest single enfranchisement event in the United States since women were granted the right to vote a century ago, 1.4 million Floridians who have completed prison time, parole, or restitution will now be allowed to make their voices heard at the ballot box for the first time since before the Civil War.

Over the past two months, GW College Democrats has worked tirelessly to try and do our part to prepare for the midterm elections. Through planning events to supporting and volunteering for progressive candidates all across the nation, we’ve focused our efforts on mobilizing voters and heightening political participation, both on GW’s campus and off.
As more women feel empowered to run for Congress, we see an increasing amount of female veterans getting their names on ballots. Female veterans have already proven themselves to be strong oracles of change and efficiency through their work in the military.
I’m voting for Democrats because they represent our generation on every issue. Democrats believe we need to address climate change, common sense gun laws, lower tuition costs, legalize marijuana and give people the tools they need to succeed.
I’m voting to restore decency and common sense to our politics. America today stands at a crossroads.
